Ssempa has been reported as receiving funding from a number of overseas evangelical Christian sources, although this is declining. Box Turtle Bulletin also reports that another Ugandan newspaper which has been publishing anti-gay articles, The Onion, carried a article yesterday quoting Ssempa saying that “since he waged war on bum drillers, funds slipping into his church project have drastically dwindled.”

Is it really called "The Onion?"

Another tabloid that's been running these anti-gay stories is called "Rolling Stone."

Yeah, but there's nothing like that mag or Mick Jagger. Thankfully, a judge slapped the Ugandan Rolling Stone with an injunction to prevent it from outing people until the judge can decide whether to make it long term. I hope he does, since what that paper did was incitement to lynching.

I did a research paper on fundamentalism crossing over into Kenya and there is as much of a growing problem of outside Christian influence as there has been Islamic influence. ACLJ, for example, a Pat Robertson outfit, has set up shop in Nairobi.

Stuff like this has been going on for years. Some Christian group from the US decides to go spread their Christianity someplace else, most usually under the umbrella of providing some kind of humanitarian relief. But, really, their intentions are about noble and transparent as an Amway convention. Ultimately, they don't want their theocracy to take a back seat to someone else's (because theirs is the one true theocracy).

This is one big reason I don't donate to foreign missions any more. Locally, maybe yes, but not foreign missionaries.

"You want to buy these cookies to send some of our missionaries to Africa?"

No.

"We're selling these magazines to build a church in [some other country]. How many would you like?"

None.

My answer is always no or none or whatever answer indicates not-no-but-hell-no, or suggest they should send condoms, birth control pills, medicine, and teach people how to grow food and have clean water. I don't give a shit whether the beneficiaries learn to pray before they learn how to take care of themselves, nor am I the least bit interested who they may pray to, if at all.
